After nearly three decades, the legendary German trance duo Cosmic Gate is facing a major change. Bossi has officially left Cosmic Gate after 27 years, marking the end of one of the longest-running partnerships in electronic music.
The Cosmic Gate split closes a defining chapter in the global trance scene.
A 27-Year Legacy in Trance
Founded in the late 1990s by Bossi (Stefan Bossems) and Nic Chagall (Claus Terhoeven), Cosmic Gate quickly became one of Germany’s most successful electronic exports. During trance’s explosive rise across Europe, the duo delivered era-defining anthems such as “Exploration of Space” and “Fire Wire.”
Across multiple album cycles and global tours, Cosmic Gate evolved from harder trance roots into a more progressive and melodic sound. Their ability to adapt while maintaining their signature emotional intensity kept them relevant in a constantly shifting electronic music landscape.
Remaining active as a trance duo for 27 years is rare. In a genre defined by rapid trends and constant reinvention, longevity at this level is exceptional.
After nearly three decades side by side, that era is now officially coming to a close.
What the Cosmic Gate Split Means
Bossi’s departure appears to be a personal decision rather than a public conflict. After decades of touring, studio production and sustaining a global brand, stepping away reflects a natural transition.
With Bossi leaving Cosmic Gate after 27 years, Nic Chagall will continue the project under the Cosmic Gate name. The future direction of the trance act remains open, but the split clearly marks the end of an era.
For the global trance community, the impact is symbolic. Cosmic Gate helped shape a generation of dancefloor memories and festival moments.
The memories and the music remain.
